The Need for a Simple Logo

It’s an exciting time when you’re starting your business up, and it’s fun to explore all of the possibilities available to you when you’re creating your logo and all of your branding, colour schemes and so on. The thing to keep in mind however, is that while you’re busy creating something spectacular and unforgettable which will propel you to stardom and bring hordes of customers through the doors your message may get lost in the eagerness and the buzz of getting up and running. You must think about how clear the message or ethos of your business is when it comes to your logo. If it’s complicated or too messy, it probably won’t be very clear when your potential customers see it. They’ll be confused about what it is that you do and could possibly not choose to use your company as they’re not sure if you’re right for their needs. Make sure there isn’t anything superfluous on the logo so that it’s straight to the point for the public to clearly see what your business is about. You want to target a specific audience, not every Tom, Dick and Harry. You’ll be wasting your time, and could potentially miss out on clients.

Your logo must be easy to recognise and to spot. Imagine if somebody is trying to describe your logo to someone else, maybe to recommend you to them, or maybe they are trying to tell someone where your shop is. Imagine how they would describe your logo, which parts of it they would mention. Would they be able to describe it easily? There are many easily describable logos out there, make sure yours is one of them. Also make sure that customers can find you in a strip of stores or on a shopping centre map. That doesn’t mean using the brightest of neon colours, it means a well thought out design.

Also be aware of how your logo will translate across various forms of media and different devices such as mobile phones. The screens are a lot smaller than the screen on a television or computer, and so you should always check to see that it doesn’t blur or look like something else entirely when viewed across different platforms. If you use social media for the business, make sure that when you use the logo as the profile picture, it can be spotted by other users and again is recognisable as your logo, and isn’t wonky or distorted.
If you plan on having a vehicle for business use and also for advertising while you’re at it, make sure that the logo looks good on the side of the vehicle. Don’t forget that the sides of vehicles are not necessarily flat and so the design of your logo may warp a little. Make sure it isn’t too warped to be recognised as you, or it’s a total waste of time, effort and of course money. Also make sure that the logo fits properly on business cards, leaflets, adverts and any stationery you have printed. Again your logo is the easiest way to advertise your business, it’s one symbol that speaks volumes about your brand and piques interest so it must be crisp, clear and concise.

Lastly the most important thing above all is to make sure that the finished logo design is not, under any circumstances, similar to any other logo on the market, or you’ll be heading for some serious hot water and your business could be dying a death even before you’ve even done your first tax return. Not to mention copyright issues, there are also issues surrounding all the points we have mentioned. Imagine you own a painting and decorating business, but your logo is extremely similar to that of say, a key cutting business. Imagine the confusion when somebody calls you asking for several bunches of keys cutting!
